Fundraiser
at Ariadne |
In
observance of United Nations Day on
October 24th, the owners of Ariadne
Restaurant, Kathleen Malloy and
Christos Tsardounis, along with
Sudan-Reach member and supporter
Cheryl McInerney, generously hosted a
highly successful fundraising event in
support of Sudan-Reach's
Empower-a-Woman Campaign. In addition
to raising awareness about the
important work of the Sudan-Reach
Women's Foundation, the evening also
consisted of a wonderful, five-course
meal and offered an opportunity for
members of the comunity to meet and
mingle in a warm, friendly environment
while lending their time and support
to the Empower-a-Woman Campaign.
Guests also learned more about Sudan,
Darfur, and the plight of Sudanese
women living in war-torn communities.
Sudan-Reach
would like to thank those of you who
joined us for the evening and give a
special thanks to Ariadne Restaurant
for hosting the event. A very special
thank you to Cheryl McInerney for her
work and effort, for organizing the
event and for supporting our work!

The
Latest from Sudan
Laura Martin
|
The
United Nations and the African Union
are currently holding peace talks in
Sirte, Libya, although several key
Darfurian rebel groups remain
absent.
Even though not all sides are
present at the talks, the AU's
Special Envoy Salim Ahmed Salim
stated that these sides are still
committed to the peace process. He
also stated that efforts are
being made to ensure that these
absent groups are involved in the
process. Currently, a team
is preparing to travel to Sudan to
meet with them.
The Special Envoy from the UN at the
talks, Jan Eliasson, emphasized that
peace talks and negotiations are the
only viable solutions for the crisis
in Darfur and that military actions
are not an option.
All sides of the conflict
have been urged to immediately cease
all hostilities to represent their
commitment to the peace talks.
UN
officials also voiced strong
concerns over alleged forced
relocations recently taking place
in a camp for internally displaced
persons (IDPs) in South Darfur
because of the manner in
which they were reportedly
carried out and because of the
possibility that such actions
could spur even more violence.
Over 200,000 people have
been killed and 2.2 million others
forced to flee their homes since
2003 because of the fighting in
the Darfur region among rebel
factions, Government forces, and
the allied militia known as the
Janjaweed.
